Boston WorkStation (BWS) is a powerful screen scraping  tool with several practical applications in a hospital or healthcare organization environment.  Screen scraping enables organizations to save time and other valuable resources that can lead to higher efficiency and a reduction of errors or redundant practices. Below are some examples of practical screen scraping applications. 

Screen Scraping for Real-time Updates

BWS receives real-time updates of patients being seen by doctors and other care providers and automatically updates the ADM system so Nursing is able to identify who to contact about patient care.

Screen Scraping and Registration Automation

Boston WorkStation automates the registration for an outside clinic. The script enters patients’ information that is provided by the clinic in a text file.

Screen Scraping to Eliminate Manual Keying Errors

The BWS screen scraping and scripting tool eliminated manual keying errors in respect to one hospital’s Physician Master File. The elimination had a huge effect, increased physician satisfaction and significantly increased productivity. The organization is a network of five hospitals that has been able to speed up the process by two days since they eliminated the manual effort. This new efficiency has been a tremendous help to the facility medical staff offices credentialing process.

Screen Scraping for the NPI Mandate 

The NPI mandate has been a huge effort for IT. One organization has over 11,000 physicians in their master and has used BWS to script into the system over 5,000 NPI numbers to date. BWS is being used to update the Meditech OR inventory usage with data provided by the OR system.  This allows the Meditech Material Management system to automatically trigger requisitions to replace used supply items from the OR.

Boston WorkStation's screen scraping tool also takes notes from a report and scripts them into the B/AR process account screen. The script eliminates the necessity of double documentation by case management staff of insurance correspondence on inpatient accounts.

One hospital uses BWS's screen scraping abilities to produce dozens of Meditech reports using NPR and MS Access from the Meditech Data Repository and “publish” the reports to the hospital Intranet for Managers to view.  This eliminates the need to train managers and staff on how and when to produce Meditech reports.  Everyone just accesses the hospital Intranet to view current and historical reports.

Screen Scraping Automation for New User Setup

BWS is automating new user setup. This includes: setting up a network account, setting up and sharing out a network folder and adding the correct permissions, registering a notes user, mapping a network drive, and logging into the notes client and doing all the initial configuration plus extra configuration the hospital has in place

Screen Scraping in Materials Management Dictionaries

Boston WorkStation ran a mass algorithm update to Materials Management Dictionaries that ran in about four hours. This would have taken two people, three days to key!
