HL7 Interface

An HL7 interface is an standard for exchanging information between medical applications and is an abbreviation of "Health Level Seven". In general terms, an HL7 interface is a protocol for data exchange. It defines the format and the content of the messages that applications must use when exchanging data with each another in various circumstances.

Because HL7 interfaces represent standards, typically they are not a flexible interface solution. They require a great deal of costly vendor involvement for testing, putting your implementation schedule at risk. Because each system has different nuances of HL7, the interfaces are usually costly to maintain given the required vendor involvement.

Boston WorkStation is a scripting technology that acts as an electronic employee would to quickly and accurately exchange information between applications.  Boston WorkStation works when HL7 is not available and it can work in conjuction with HL7 when required. HL7 interfaces do not slow or complicate the exchange of data when using Boston WorkStation.

"As you know we are using a Meditech system. We implemented a cardiology PACS system. Once we realized that we would be sending the orders to ProSolv (the cardiology PACs) we decided that our process would work better if the reports that resolved the orders were entered in $T RAD also. We used BSS to accept the HL7 message from the Vendor and type the data into Meditech."  Frank Vaisey, Canton-Potsdam Hospital

Mitch Lawrence at Christus Health says: "As of this morning, we have 405 different Boston Workstation scripts scheduled to run on 9 different virtual servers. Our scripts range from automated printing, MARS queues, PDF downloads, vendor downloads, password changes, file transfers, etc., etc.. That is only for Meditech C/S scripting. The product has a wide array of uses, and can be used for pretty much any application. Given its VBA backend, the possibilities are pretty much endless."
