RIVERSIDE HEALTH SYSTEM EARNS USER EXCELLENCE AWARD FOR INNOVATIVE USE OF SCRIPTING TECHNOLOGY

Boston WorkStation Scripting Helps Improve Efficiency in Registration; Saves Thousands of Dollars and Staff Hours Per Year

Posted on 5/22/2008

SHERBORN, Mass. —May 23, 2008—Boston Software Systems™, the leader in workflow automation technology to the healthcare market, today named Riverside Health System in Newport News, VA as the winner of the Second Annual Boston WorkStation™ User Excellence Award. This honor recognizes Riverside Health System for its successful state registry synch and emergency room registration applications, which save the hospital more than $25,000 and more than 2,400 staff hours per year.

Using Boston WorkStation, the IS department at Riverside Health System is able to automate a QI initiative with the State of Virginia. Riverside matches its entire patient population with the State’s death registry, and uses Boston WorkStation against GE Centricity Physician Office EMR to decease all of the patients that match the state registry. “It took us only three hours to write a script for a process that is saving our staff more than 350 hours per year,” said Jim Foss, director of IS physician services, Riverside Health System. “Thanks to Boston WorkStation we have a more accurate patient list and a more efficient billing process.”

Additionally, Riverside Health System needed an automated way to log patients out of its emergency department (ED). One person in the Medical Records department would spend eight hours per day updating the registration system to log out patients. “Using a Boston WorkStation script in our Siemens Invision system, we can now log these patients out in less than one hour. Again, the script took us only three hours to write. The result is not only a more efficient registration process in the ED, but also a full-time employee to use in a more substantial capacity,” added Foss.

“Leading hospitals nationwide, like Riverside Health System, are applying Boston WorkStation in innovative ways to accomplish a variety of critical workflow automation and integration tasks. They realize that the operational aspects of running a hospital feed directly into patient safety and quality care,” said Sara McNeil, president of Boston Software Systems. “Our customers are proud of the results they are seeing with Boston WorkStation. Today’s healthcare organizations must invest wisely in technology, and the investment is paying off quickly. By helping healthcare organizations to reinvent their existing processes, Boston WorkStation saves hospitals weeks of work and thousands of dollars, and enables them to focus on their core competencies.”
