Boston Software Systems Launches Boston Workstation 8.0 Offering Unprecendented Level of Workflow Automation and Integration

Posted on 5/23/2005

Boston Software Systems, the leader in workflow automation technology to the healthcare market, today announced it will release Boston WorkStation 8.0 (BWS 8.0), a major upgrade of the Company’s flagship workflow automation and systems integration product, in Q2 2005. Boston Software Systems will be introducing BWS 8.0 through several presentations at MUSE International June 1 -3 in Las Vegas. For more information please visit our events section

With BWS 8.0, Boston Software Systems is taking a whole new approach to script development. As organizations look to automate existing workflows and develop new ones, this approach allows them to develop processes that more closely match the requirements of their workflow in a more logical, user-centric fashion.

Script development begins with outlining the required steps to complete a process, and then filling in the detail of the specific rules that will apply to each step. As you proceed, BWS creates a graphical representation of the development process, allowing developers to easily see where exceptions might take place, and create the appropriate mechanisms for handling them. Users may view the script in several ways, from the graphical outline or the specific detail of each applied rule that is written while walking through the process. They can also see the applications in the development window as they are manipulated.

“The Credit Valley Hospital in Mississauga, Ontario, implemented Boston WorkStation to improve the quality and expediency of service to its growing patient population,” said Saira Somani-Mendlin, an application analyst at The Credit Valley Hospital. “Boston WorkStation helped us improve our registration workflow which includes self-serve registration. BWS literally fills in the blanks which will allow registration clerks more time to work directly with patients and expedite service delivery. The Credit Valley Hospital will become the first hospital in Canada to implement address validation and residence postal code cross-reference. We are rolling Boston WorkStation out to other facilities to address postal code problems. The process was developed to meet the unique requirements of Canadian healthcare. However, improving the quality of information at the point of registration is a universal issue.”

With Boston Software Systems’ new development approach, script developers can very easily apply sophisticated, rules-based logic to the information that appears on a screen. They can develop scripts to virtually watch over a user’s shoulder and respond to any condition by popping up a query screen, running another script, or sending a notification or any other response mechanism. Parsing complex messages such as HL7 or XML, reading or writing to any file type including Access®, Excel® and Word®, becomes an integrated part of the development process.

Like previous releases, BWS 8.0 uses powerful Visual Basic for Applications® (VBA) and is also compatible with VB6 and .Net®. The list of built in connections is expanded including Digital OCR. BWS is completely compatible with any Windows based application including Citrix environments. It is also backward compatible with earlier versions of Boston WorkStation.

“Processes are rarely linear, so scripts that automate those processes cannot be linear. Boston WorkStation 8.0 allows the developer to create processes in the most logical way. It accelerates development time by simplifying the development process. Now, you can more easily create a user-centric script that actually monitors and manages how users interact with information on their screen,” said Sara McNeil, president of Boston Software Systems. “Our fast-growing customer base of providers and system and application vendors has specifically influenced the development of these new features. Boston WorkStation addresses the gaps that exist between applications and systems, as well as those between manual and automated processes. By helping healthcare organizations to reinvent their existing processes, Boston WorkStation can save customers weeks of work, thousands of dollars, and enables them to focus on their core competencies.”
