Payment Posting
Like most hospitals, University Health System works with a number of payers: Medicare, Medicaid, Blue Cross BlueShield, Humana, United Healthcare, AETNA, Medicaid Trailblazer 1011, Superior and others. In one week, the staff downloads 25-30 files with an average of 40,000 payments and adjustments to post. In any given year UHS posts more than 2,400,000 payments. Instead of manually downloading and posting files, and then building reports, Boston WorkStation does this automatically, then sends an email alert to the appropriate staff.
In this process, Boston WorkStation downloads a file from the payer’s FTP site, using WARftp via High-Speed Internet, or bulletin board system (BBS), using HyperTerminal via modem. The automatic download process kicks off at 1 a.m. and 3 p.m. and takes about two hours each time. The automated payment posting feeds into IDXTerm.
